Helen Jones is no stranger to grief. In 2009, her 22 year old son, John Horton, was killed while in the custody of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies in downtown Los Angeles. The LA County coroner’s office ruled his death a suicide, despite evidence John may have been beaten to death. The first time I heard Helen tell John’s story was during a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020. In the lead up to this project, Helen and I spent many hours on the phone talking about John, his kind spirit and creative talents, their plans to work collaboratively, and the impact his death has had on their family. Helen’s fight for John, and subsequently for so many others who have died at the hands of Los Angeles law enforcement, has been her driving force. This body of work is for Helen and John.
